Unlike other aryl azides bearing electron-withdrawing ortho-substituents, o-azidobenzonitriles on photolysis in aqueous-tetrahydrofuran yield mixture of the expected 3-cyano- and the unexpected 7-cyano-3H-azepin-2(1H)-ones.
