A novel, high-yield route has been developed for the synthesis of perfluoroalkylated arylphosphines, involving simple, copper-mediatedcoupling of haloarylphosphine oxides with perfluoroalkyl iodides followed by reduction with trichlorosilane.

A series of phosphorus(III) compounds incorporating one or more C6F13 ‘ponytails’ have been prepared as a pool of ligands for coordination and catalytic studies under the fluorous biphase regime. Solubility studies indicate that only ligands with three or more ponytails are preferentially soluble in perfluorocarbon solvents.

Simple and generic approaches to fluorous soluble ligands have been developed and applied to the synthesis of various fluorinated arylphosphines including polymeric ones. The utility of some of these ligands has been demonstrated in catalysis in supercritical CO2 (scCO(2)) and fluorous solvents. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
