    A thermographic element comprising in a non-aqueous binder medium a silver salt oxidising agent in reactive association with a compound comprising a plurality of redox colour releasing moieties such that oxidation of each redox colour releasing moiety causes release from said compound of a thermally diffusible dye. The compounds many of which are new incorporate two or more developer moieties into a single molecule to minimise the diffusibility of the compound. Following oxidation, either directly by the silver salt or by means of a cross-oxidising agent, each oxidised developer moiety releases a thermally diffusible dye. The compounds are of sufficient size and molecular weight to slow or prevent diffusion in imaging systems and yet possess several active developer moieties per molecule which is advantageous over known ballasted dye releasers which comprise bulky molecules with only a single developer moiety.

    Photothermographic elements incorporating leuco forms of phenazinium dyes to provide a developed colour image. The dye has a nucleaus of the general formula: in which;    X represents    Y is H or any substituent other than amino or amido,    R¹, R², R⁴ and R¹⁰ are independently selected from H, alkyl, aryl, alkylsulfonyl, arysulfonyl, alkylcarbonyl, arylcarbonyl, or    R¹ and R² together represent the necessary atoms to complete a cyclic structure or one or more of R¹, R² and R⁴ represent the necessary atoms to complete a cyclic structure fused to the nucleus having skeletal atoms selected from C, N, 0 and S, and    R¹¹ represents any group which will not prevent oxidative cleavage of the X-N bond,    with the proviso that when R¹ is C₂H₅    R² is not C₂H₄NHSO₂CH₃.

    Photothermographic elements employing improved base precursors that undergo thermal decomposition are disclosed. Thermal-dye-bleach agents, and in particular, a novel class of salts of arylsulfonylacetic acids as bleaching agents for photothermographic use are disclosed. Photothermographic elements employing these thermal-dye-bleach agents are suitable for use as acutance and antihalation systems, bleachable filter dye materials, and in promoting unblocking of various components such as blocked developers, especially in photothermographic elements.

    Post-processing stabilizers for photothermographic, silver imaging media are disclosed. The stabilizers are represented by the following general formulae: wherein: R¹, R², and R³ are independently H, halogen, an alkyl group, an alkoxy group, a thioalkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, a perhalogenated alkyl group, or taken together form a cycloaliphatic group. Compounds of formula (I) may be used as stabilizer precursors in photothermographic silver imaging media to provide post-processing stability without significantly adversely affecting desired properties of the photothermographic material.

    A photothermographic element comprising a support bearing a photothermographic medium, the medium comprising a light sensitive silver halide in reactive association with a silver salt of an organic acid and a colour generating reducing agent which is a leuco compound which is oxidisable by silver ions into a coloured dye of the general formula: in which:     n = 0, 1 or 2,     R¹ represents H, CN, lower alkyl of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, aryl or COOR⁶ in which R⁶ is lower alkyl of 1 to 5 carbon atoms or aryl,     R² and R³ independently represent CN, NO₂, COOR⁶, SO₂R⁶, CO.R⁶ in which R6 is as defined above or R² and R³ together represent the necessary atoms to form a 5- or 6-membered carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring having ring atoms selected from C, N, O and S atoms, which carbocyclic or heterocyclic rings possess at least one conjugated electron withdrawing substituent,     R⁴ and R⁵ independently represent H, CN or lower alkyl of 1 to 5 carbon atoms or together represent the necessary atoms to complete a 5 or 6-membered carbocyclic ring, and     Ar represents: a) a thienyl group which may be substituted with one or more lower alkyl groups of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, b) a furyl goup which may be substituted with one or more lower alkyl groups of 1 to 5 carbon atoms or c) a phenyl group which may be substituted with one or more groups selected from halogen, hydroxy, lower alkyl of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, lower alkoxy of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, NR⁷R⁸ in which R⁷ and R⁸ are independently selected from H, lower alkyl group of 1 to 5 carbon atoms which may possess substituents selected form CN, OH, halogen and phenyl, and phenyl group optionally substituted with substituents selected from OH, halogen, lower alkyl of 1 to 5 carbon atoms or lower alkoxy of 1 to 5 carbon atoms or R⁷ and R⁸ together represent the necessary atoms to complete a morpholino group, or said phenyl group may be part of a larger ring structure comprising two or more rings which may be aromatic or heterocyclic containing up . to 20 ring atoms selected from C, N, 0 and S.
