    A heat-sensitive recording material in which a heat-sensitive color-developing layer comprising, as the main components, a usually colorless or light-colored color former and a developer capable of developing the color former upon heating on a support, characterized by comprising, as the developer, crystals of 3,3'-diallyl-4,4'-dihydroxy-diphenyl sulfone which have DSC (Te) of at least 149°C and which are of a crystal form characterized by an X-ray diffraction pattern having peaks at least at diffraction angles (2θ) [°] of 7.2 and 22.0, obtained by an X-ray powder diffractometry using Cu-Kα rays. This heat-sensitive recording material is high in sensitivity, little in Discoloration of the ground in heat and moisture and excellent in image durability.

    The content of compound(s) having a molecular weight of 650-670, preferably a molecular weight of 660, as measured by mass spectrometry, is reduced to 0.5 mass% or less in a heat-sensitive recording material comprising 3,3'-diallyl-4,4'-dihydroxy diphenylsulfone, or in a diphenylsulfone or a color-developing agent. Provided is, thereby, a heat-sensitive recording material, a color-developing agent, or a diphenylsulfone which cause less background fogging under moisture and heat conditions and which has excellent preservation stability of a colored image.

    The developer for a thermal recording material of the present invention comprises a condensed composition consisting of, of condensates represented by the formula (1): 1 wherein R is a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group, a lower alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, an alkoxyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, an aryl group or an aralkyl group, R in the number of m may be the same or different and m is an integer of 0-3, X and Y are each a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group or an aryl group, provided that at least one of X an dY is an alkyl group or an aryl group, and n is an integer of 0-3, a condensate having two cores wherein n=0 or a condensed composition comprising a condensate having two cores wherein n=0 as a main component, and at least one kind of condensate of the formula wherein n=1-3 (3-5 core condensate). The developer for thermal recording materials of the present invention is applied to a heat-coloring layer of thermal recording materials, along with a basic dye (preferably further with a sensitizer). According to the present invention, a developer for thermal recording materials, which is capable of realizing a thermal recording material capable of affording high colored image density and superior in preservation stability (particularly heat resistance and moisture resistance) of recorded images and non-image areas, while satisfying recent requirements for high sensitivity, can be obtained.
