    Nematic Liquid Crystals with a Trifluoromethyl Group

    We have synthesised a new class of compounds incorporating a trifluoromethyl group in the terminal alkoxy or alkenyloxy chain. Compounds containing several aromatic rings were synthesised with a view to producing compounds of high birefringence. This also included the synthesis of compounds containing a carbon-carbon triple bond. Compounds with three 1,4-disubstituted rings were synthesised in order to produce materials with a high nematic clearing point and as low a melting point as possible. Laterally fluoro-substituted compounds were prepared to generate a high positive value of the dielectric anisotropy, a low melting point and no smectic mesophases. Substances containing a cyclohexyl ring, which tend to induce a lower viscosity and compounds incorporating a bicyclo[2.2.2]octane ring were also synthesised in order to produce a high nematic clearing point and to influence the elastic constants. The (E)-trifluorobut-2-enyloxy-compounds were prepared in attempts to produce compounds with appropriate elastic constants and a high birefringence.

    A large number of new liquid crystals incorporating the 2,5-disubstituted thiophene ring have been prepared and their mesomorphic behaviour studied in order to systematically investigate the correlation between the molecular structure and mesomorphism of thiophene derivatives with different shapes, polarisability and polarity. As a consequence of these investigations we have prepared a new class of liquid crystals incorporating a 2,5-disubstituted thiophene ring and a conjugated trans-carbon–carbon double bond in the terminal chain. These novel thiophene derivatives are the first liquid crystals incorporating a 2,5-disubstituted thiophene ring to exhibit a nematic phase at room temperature. This enables the flexoelectric coefficients of a bent-shaped molecule to be measured directly and at room temperature for the first time to the authors' knowledge. Many of these new thiophenes exhibit a high birefringence and a high nematic clearing point and are of potential use as components of nematic mixtures in LCDs.

    Compounds of formula (I) are provided which are particularly useful in super twisted nematic devices, where n may be 0-5; m may be 0-5; p may be 1-9; q may be 1, 1, or 2; A1, A2 are independently chosen from 1-4, -disubstituted benzene, 2,5-disubstituted pyrimidine, or 2,5-disubstituted pyridine, trans- 1,4-disubstituted cyclohexane, trans- 2,5-disubstitued dioxane. The aromatic rings may be laterally substituted with F, Cl, Br or CN; Z1 may be O, COO, OOC; Z2, Z3 are independent chosen from a direct bond, COO, OOC, C2H4, CH2O, OCH2, or -c≡c-, provided that when Z1 is O and m is 1, 3 or 5 the carbon—carbon double bond configuration is E; provided that when Z1 is O and m is 2 or 4 the carbon—carbon double bond configuration is Z; provided that when Z1 is COO or OOC and m is 0, 2 or 4 the carbon—carbon double bond configuration is E; and provided that when Z1 is COO or OOC and m is 1, 3 or 5 the carbon—carbon double bond configuration is Z.
