An efficient synthetic method for preparing functionalised terpyridyl analogues based on Negishi's zinc coupling is developed. These ligands form cyclometallated complexes; attaching them to cyclodextrins allows preparation of luminescent cyclometallated ruthenium cyclodextrins for the assembly of photoactive units via non-covalent interactions, (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd.
