Disclosed is a copolymer capable of forming an optically anisotropic melt comprising recurring structural units of Formulas I, II, and optionally III
wherein each R is independently a chemically inert substituent; and each R¹ is independently benzoil or phenoxy. The present invention also relates to a process for preparing the copolymer. The copolymer of the present invention usually have a melting point below 350°C and can be readily melt extruded into fibers, films or the like.
