A process for making oriented film of perfluorinated polymer which is either an ion exchange polymer or a melt-fabricable precursor thereto, which has been extended in the range of about 1.3X to 3X in at least one planar direction, is disclosed. Such film is made by swelling a film in melt-fabricable form in a liquid organic compound and either restraining it while drying, or stretching it followed by drying under restraint. The oriented melt-fabricable film can be converted to ion-exchange film by hydrolysis under restraint. The resulting film has good anion rejection properties, strength and flatness, and remains taut in use after being mounted dry in a chloralkali cell.
Novel compositions include compounds of the formula:
wherein the carbon rings are fully fluorinated and R is selected from the group consisting of fluorine, -CF₃ or -CF(CF₃)₂.
Novel compositions of matter are disclosed having the formula
wherein the carbon rings are fully fluorinated to remove all hydrogens and olefinic character. The compositions have utility as heat transfer agents, hydraulic fluids, vapor phase soldering fluids, gas (O₂, N₂, CO₂, H₂, etc.) transport agents, such as in biological and medical fields, as well as utility as burn-in test fluid.

Curable compositions are provided for forming highly lubricious and long-lasting surfaces with optical clarity useful, for example, in optical applications in harsh environmental conditions. In some aspects, the curable formulations include an end-group modified perfluoropolyether (PFPE), a fluorinated lubricant, and a compatibilizer. The mixtures are curable to form a solid having an exposed surface. In some aspects, the fluorinated lubricant is chemically and physically matched to the resin such that, when cured, at least a portion of the fluorinated lubricant spontaneously forms a lubricious surface on the exposed surface. In some aspects, the compatibilizer is present in an amount sufficient to make the curable mixture miscible and to make the solid optically transparent while still spontaneously forming the lubricious surface. The lubricious surface can also be self-replenishing such that, when the lubricant is removed from the exposed surface, additional lubricant migrates to the surface to replenish the lubricious overlayer.
