E- and Z-Enediones are easily accessible by controlled oxidation of 2,5-disubstituted furans with Mo(CO)6/cumyl hydroperoxide system. The use of t-butyl hydroperoxide, as oxygen donor, leads to the formation of 2H-pyran-3(6H)-one derivatives.

Dialkylfurans were reacted with magnesium monoperoxyphtalate (MMPP) in methanol to give 2,5-dimethoxy-2,5-dihydrofurans in high yields under mild reaction conditions.
The unusual reactivity of t-butylhydroperoxide under acid-catalysis allows the easy conversion of furan derivatives into 3(6H)-pyranones.
