Palladium-catalyzed dehydrogenative coupling reactions between acetanilides and benzylicalcohols under aqueous conditions are reported. A wide range of benzophenone derivatives could be obtained in good to excellent yields up to 98 %. Mechanism studies showed that a bimetallic palladium cyclopalladated complex might be involved in the catalysis.

Compounds having a quinazolin-2-(thi)one nucleus are described. These compounds are useful in the inhibition of HIV reverse transcriptase, the prevention or treatment of infection by HIV and the treatment of AIDS, either as compounds, pharmaceutically acceptable salts, pharmaceutical composition ingredients, whether or not in combination with other antivirals, immunomodulators, antibiotics or vaccines. Methods of treating AIDS and methods of preventing or treating infection by HIV are also described.

A novel Pd-catalyzed decarboxylative ortho-acylation of acetanilides with alpha-oxocarboxylic acids is realized at room temperature. This reaction provides efficient access to o-acyl acetanilides under mild conditions.
