In connection with the characterization of methylcadalenes by modern spectroscopic methods, all five, theoretically possible, methylcadalenes have been prepared by new and simpler procedures. UV, IR and PMR spectra of these compounds are reported and discussed. TLC of isomeric naphthalenes over silica gel impregnated with trinitrobenzene is described.

L'ensemble de nos résultats donne une image àpeu prés complété de l'action de solutions aqueuses alcalines à env. 200° sur le méthyl-2-pentène-2-a1 et l'éthyl-2-hexène-2-al, qui grâce à la ramification de leur squelette carbonique en α, résistent à la résinification. II met clairement en évidence le rôle important de l'alcalinité dans leur évolution et la différence fondamentale de leur comportement

This route to bridged [4] and [8] annulenes employs a new retrosynthetic algorithm, transannular π-bond pairing, as its basis and improved transfer reagents for substituted cyclobutadienes to achieve the synthesis.
