  A Practical Synthesis of 3,4-Dimethoxy-o-toluic Acid

  摘要：

  A streamlined, telescoped process has been developed for the preparation of 3,4-dimethoxy-o-toluic acid, starting with economical and readily available 2,3-dimethoxybenzaidehyde. Catalytic reduction of the aldehyde functional group generated dimethoxytoluene, which was brominated in situ. The resultant aryl bromide was isolated, converted into a Grignard reagent, and transformed into a carboxylic acid with dry ice. The process was demonstrated on a pilot-plant scale.

  The synthesis of 6,7-dimethoxy-4-hydroxyisochroman-3-one 10 from 2,3-dimethoxytoluene (11) via glyoxylate 12 is reported. Compound 10 strongly inhibited vegetative growth of tobacco plants, whereas developmental patterns (protein levels, protein profile, pigments, and chlorophylls) were not affected. Morphological changes were observed in the leaves of the treated plants.
