On the isocyanide carbon atom, two CC sigma bonds are formed in the bicyclization reaction of the readily available acyclic substrates with tosylmethyl isocyanides. The reaction can proceed under extremely mild and metal-free conditions to give the products in high to excellent yields. A base-catalyzed tandem Michael addition/intramolecular isocyanide [3 + 2] cycloaddition of ethyl isocyanoacetate and Michael acceptors with tethered carbonyl groups is described. This reaction leads to the formation of fused oxazolines in a highlydiastereoselective manner under very mild conditions.
