The gas-phase thermolysis of the norbornadienespirodithiolane S-oxides (5) and (7) led to benzene, ethylene, and carbon disulphide as the major products, possibly involving carbon disulphide oxides as intermediates. Thermolyses of the related sulphones (9) or (14) led to completely different product patterns.

The asymmetric oxidation (-BuO2H, Ti(OPr-)4, DET) of a series of 1,3-dithiolanes was carried out to produce the corresponding S-oxides with high chemical and optical yields. By contrast, the oxidation of 1,3-dithianes and 1,3-oxathiolane prepared from the same carbonyl compounds gave much lower optical yields. Abstractmagnified imageN,N′‐Bis[3,5‐bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]thiourea, employed at only 1 mol% loading, was found to be a very effective catalyst for the oxidation of sulfides with tert‐butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP), affording the sulfoxides in high yield, excellent chemoselectivity, fairly good diastereoselectivity.
