    We report an efficient perfluoroalkoxylation reaction of alkyl halides catalyzed by copper(I) iodide (CuI), which facilitates the simultaneous activation of both perfluoroalkoxide and alkyl halides. This methodology is tolerant of a wide range of functional groups and eliminates the need for costly metal reagents. The reaction is conducted in a single step under mildly practical conditions.

    Benzyl, prop-2-ynyl and allyl chlorodifluoroacetates 3a, bromodifluoroacetates 3b or fluorosulfonyl-difluoroacetates 3c, when decomposed in the presence of 1 equivalent of copper(I) iodide at an appropriate temperature in dimethylformamide, gave the corresponding trifluoromethyl derivatives in good to excellent yields. The products can also be obtained directly by ester exchange of XCF2CO2Et (X = FSO2, Cl, Br) 6 and the corresponding alcohols in the presence of KF and Cul. A trifluoromethylation-dehydroxylation mechanism, initiated by Cul, is proposed.

    Bromodifluoroacetyl fluoride, CF2BrC(O)F, was prepared through the gas-phase reaction of bromotrifluoroethene, CF2CFBr, with molecular oxygen initiated either by NO2 or CF3OF. The compound was experimentally studied by FTIR spectroscopy of the gas phase and also isolated in Ar and N-2 matrices at low temperature. The energy differences between the possible conformers were theoretically studied, as well as the vibrational spectra of the conformers. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
