  • Self-assembly of a series of thiocyanate complexes with high two-photon absorbing active in near-IR range and bioimaging applications

    A series of novel complexes bearing high fluorescence quantum yields and showing the peak two-photon absorption (2 PA) cross-sections in the near-infrared region, Zn(SCN)(2)L-2 (1), [Cd(SCN)(2)L-2](n) (2), Co(SCN)(2)L-4 (3), Ni(SCN)(2)L-4 (4), [CdHgL2(SCN)(4)](n) (5) and [MnHg(SCN)(4)L-2](n) (6), containing functional chromophore (L = (E)-(4-diethyl anilinostyryl)pyridine), were synthesized in high yields. Crystal structures of all the complexes were confirmed. Hetero-metal complexes (5, 6: L:M = 1:1) present much higher two-photon absorption (2 PA) cross-sections (sigma) in comparison with those of the homo-metal complexes (L:M = 4:1 in 3 and 4, L:M = 2:1 in 1 and 2) and the free ligand (L) which may due to the fact that the hetero-metal complexes have more bridged anions (SCN-), conjugated subunits -[Hg(SCN)(2)M]- and -[Hg-2(SCN)(4)M-2]-. In addition, the results revealed that 2 PA response was much enhanced for the Zn(SCN)(2)L-2 and two-photon fluorescence cell imaging experiment proved its potential application.   • Synthesis, structures and photoluminescence of thiocyanate bridged metal-organic polymers containing functional imidazole ligand

    Three new coordination polymers, [Cd(SCN)(2)L2L](n) (1), [CdHg(SCN)(4)L2L](n) (2) and [MnHg(SCN)(4)L-2](n) (3) have been prepared by the self-assembly of L with the corresponding metal salts and NaSCN (L is a new functional rigid imidazole ligand, trans-4-imidazolyl-4'-(N,N-diethylamino)stilbene). The crystal structures of the coordination polymers have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. [Cd(SCN)(2)L-2](n) (1) crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system with space group P1. Adjacent Cd-II ions are bridged by SCN- ligands to form infinite chains with the remaining two positions of six-coordinated Cd-II ion being occupied by two imidazole ligands. [CdHg(SCN)(4)L-2](n) (2) crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system with space group P1. Cd-II and Hg-II centers are bridged by SCN- ligands to form two-dimensional framework sheets. Cdn(II) and Hg-II ions are coordinated by six nitrogen atoms and four thiocyanate sulfur atoms, respectively. [MnHg(SCN)(4)L2L](n) (3) crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system with space group P2(1)/c. Each Mn-II ion is in a N-6 distorted octahedral geometry, and each Hg-II ion is in a S-4 distorted tetrahedral geometry, which exhibit similar coordination mode to that of 2. Mn-II and Hg-II ions are linked by bridging NCS- groups to form two-dimensional sheets.     The title complex, [MnHg(SCN)(4) (CH4N2O)(3)](n), consists of slightly distorted octahedral MnN3O3 and tetrahedral HgS4 units. The Mn-II atom is coordinated by the O atoms of three urea molecules and by the N atoms of three SCN- ions; Hg-II is coordinated by four S atoms from SCN- ions. Each pair of Mn-II and Hg-II atoms is connected by an -SCN- bridge, forming infinite two-dimensional -Mn-NCS-Hg- networks.
  • Crystal growth and characterization of the organometallic nonlinear optical crystal: manganese mercury thiocyanate (MMTC)

    Manganese mercury thiocyanate (MMTC) has been discovered to be a novel organometallic nonlinear optical crystal. In this article, preparation and crystal growth of MMTC have been investigated. The crystal grown is characterized by infrared spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and transmission spectrum. The cutoff wavelength is 373 nm, which is nearly the same as that of cadmium mercury thiocyanate (CMTC). The thermoanalysis shows that it possesses better physicochemical stability than that of CMTC.     Manganese mercury thiocyanate bis-dimethyl sulfoxide (MMTD), a novel organo-metallic nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal, was grown by a slow evaporation technique over a period of 30 days. The grown crystal was subjected to single crystal X-ray diffraction to determine the unit cell parameters. The optical properties of MMTD were investigated by UV-Vis-NIR, FTIR and FT-Raman spectroscopic techniques. The second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency of the sample was measured using a Q-switched, mode-locked Nd:YAG laser and the results were compared with urea and manganese mercury thiocyanate (MMTC). The thermal parameters, such as the thermal diffusivity (alpha), thermal effusivity (e), thermal conductivity (k) and heat capacity (c(p)) of MMTD were measured by the photopyroelectric (PPE) technique and the results are discussed. The dielectric response and mechanical properties of MMTD have also been investigated and reported. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
