Glycidyl (meth)acrylate is prepared by transesterification of methyl (meth)acrylate with glycidol in the presence of a polymerisation inhibitor and, as a catalyst, a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium cyanide, cyanate, thiocyanate or carboxylate. This catalyst can be prepared in situ from a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium halide and a potassium cyanide, cyanate, thiocyanate or carboxylate. At the end of the reaction, the catalyst is deactivated by addition of an alkali or alkaline earth salt of a sulfonic acid or a heteropolyacid, with the exception of the potassium salt.
