and chlorine or bromine in a substantially anhydrous inert organic solvent, which comprises mixing the halogenating compounds in an inert organic solvent with a stabilizing amount of a tertiary amine base or a complexing agent selected from a Lewis acid-metal halide, phosphorous pentachloride or bromine; with the limitation that when X is Cl the complexing agent is not bromine.
