  The influence of various crown-ethers on the reactions of polychloroaromatic compounds with alkali metal fluorides (KF, RbF, CsF) has been studied. It is shown that the catalytic effect of the crown-ether is almost independent of the nature of the polychloroaromatic substrate and that it is most effective only in a definite range of reaction rates.

  The fluorinations of tetrachloropyrimidine, 2,4,6-trichloropyrimidine and trichloro-s-triazine were carried out in sealed tubes with KF in presence of inert gas and then compared.   An essentially anhydrous agitated mixture of (i) finely-divided essentially anhydrous alkali metal fluoride (e.g., KF), (ii) haloaromatic compound having at least one halogen atom of atomic number greater than 9 on an aromatic ring (e.g., C 6 Cl 6 ), and (iii) an organo guanidinium salt catalyst (e.g., [(Et 2 N) 2 CNEt 2 ]Br), is heated at a temperature at which fluorine replaces one or more of the ring halogen atoms of the haloaromatic compound. A new synthetic route to hexahydrocarbyl guanidinium salts is also described.
