O-p-Toluensulfonylisonitrosomalononitrile by the action of malononitrile in basic conditions yields salts of 1,1,3,3 tetracyano-2 azapropenide. Similar polycyano derivatives are obtained with various other carbanions. The heterocyclisation of the 2 azapropenides into pyrazines is described.

Abstract The pharmacodynamic properties1-3 of substituted amino pyrazines as well as their importance in the synthesis of pteridine and other polyfused heterocyclic systems is well known4,5. In this investigation we aim to prepare a new series of condensed heterocyclic systems containing the pyrazine nucleus.
2-Imidazolidinone O-sulfonyloxime reacts with various aryl and alkyl Grignardreagents as an electrophilic amination reagent, giving N-alkylated imines. The resulting imines are transformed to primaryamines and N-methyl secondary amines by hydrolysis with CsOH and LiAlH4 reduction, respectively.
- 2,2-Dichloroethylene-1,1-dicarbonitrile reacted with sodium azide to give 2,2- diazidoethylene-1,1-dicarbonitrile, which underwent thermolysis to give tricyanomethanimine, C4N4. The latter is as reactive as TCNE toward electron-rich molecules.
