Abstract Synthesis and characterizatio of the epimeric 3,6-dideoxy- d (and l )-hexulosonic acids are described. The configuration of each epimer has been established by measurements of rate of periodate oxidation, and each assignment agrees with that determined by enzyme-specificity studies.
