One-step Synthesis of Dibutyl Furandicarboxylates from Galactaric Acid

Dibutyl 2,5-furandicarboxylate (2) and dibutyl 2,3-furandicarboxylate (3) were synthesized using one step from galactaric acid and 1-butanol. Sulfuric acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid, and heteropolyacids were good catalysts for the reaction. The reaction time was dependent on the amount of the catalyst, but the final yields of the main product, 2 remained unchanged.
three components (i.e., heteroarene, alcohol, and CHCl3). The copper additive was confirmed to simultaneously promote the reaction in three pathways: oxidant cracking, single electron transfer, and alcoholysis. By means of this protocol, various functionalized furancarboxylates and other heteroarenecarboxylates were facilely obtained in moderate to good yields.

According to an example aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of producing furan carboxylates from aldaric acids in the presence of a solid heterogeneous catalyst and a solvent with short reaction time. The feedstock for the production is a stable compound, which allows industrial scaling of the process. Solid acid catalyst and sustainable solvent provide considerable reduction of toxic waste compared to traditional methods, and recyclability.
