    Combining R2Cd (R an alkyl or Ph group), the corresponding R2Mg compound, and 1,4,8,- 11-tetramethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazatetradecane, 2,1,1-cryptand, or 2,2,1-cryptand in solution quantitatively produces R3Cd- and RMg(macrocycle)(+) ions. Solutions obtained by combining the same macrocycles with R2Cd alone or with R2Cd plus the corresponding R2Zn compound do not contain significant amounts of ions; rapid exchange of R groups in these solutions, however, may be due to formation of trace amounts of R3Cd- ions.

    Abstract The synthesis and characterization of the compound bis(2,2-dimethylpropyl)cadmium(II), bis(neopentyl)cadmium(II)} and its 1:1 adduct with 2,2′-bipyridyl are reported. The alkyl is moderately volatile (vapour pressure ca 3 torr, 52°C) and may find application as a precursor for the deposition of cadmium-containing films by MOCVD.

    The synthesis and characterization of the neopentyl complexes of cadmium (CH3)3CH2CCdE2CNEt2 (E  S or Se) and the related mixed metal species (CH3)3CH2CZn0.5Cd0.5Se2CNEt2 are reported. A single crystal X-ray structure determination on for (CH3)3CH2CCdSe2CNEt2; the compound is dimeric. All of the complexes decompose to give the corresponding binary or ternary metal chalcogenides.
