Hydrogenation of Hindered Ketones Catalyzed by a Silica-Supported Compact Phosphine−Rh System

A heterogeneous mono(phosphine)-Rh catalyst system silica-SMAP-Rh(OMe)(cod), where silica-SMAP stands for a caged, compact trialkylphosphine (SMAP) supported on silica gel, showed broad applicability toward the hydrogenation of hindered ketones. Doubly a-branched ketones such as diisopropyl ketone was hydrogenated under nearly atmospheric conditions. Di-tert-butyl ketone could be hydrogenated under more forcing conditions.

The rates and products of solvolysis of propylene oxide and propylene sulfide in acetic acid have been determined. The results show that terminal attack is preferred, although not exclusively, and that the sulfide is the less reactive by a factor of 50–60. This difference is accounted for mainly in the preexponential factor. Solvent isotope effects are also observed.

An auxiliary-assisted Pd-catalyzed C(sp3)–H sulfonamidation approach using NFSI as both nitrogen source and oxidant to afford 1,2-amino alcohol derivatives is described in this paper. This method is novel and attractive because of its high yields, wide range of substrate scopes, and good tolerance for many functional groups. Oximido and sulfonyl group can be removed with this method.
