Oxidation of the cyclohxa-1,3-diene-CCl2 bis-adduct 4 with chromium(VI) oxide in acetic acid gives the diketone 10. Subsequent reduction with sodium borohydride, giving 11, fomation of thionocarbonate 12, and elimination with trimethethyl phosphite provides a facile synthesis of the tetrachloro bis-σ-homobenzene 9, which is totally resistant to further attack of CCl2 and epoxidation.
