In that process, an alkyl halide is reacted with a benzene compound having two or three substituents selected from the group consisting of the halogens and the trifluoromethyl group, and also having a hydrogen atom whose two ortho positions are occupied by two of the said substituents. The reaction is carried out in the presence of at least one alkali metal amide and at least one agent that complexes with the cation of the alkali metal amide.
