Abstract A facile and efficient procedure for synthesis of 1,1‐diacetatesfrom aldehydes with acetic anhydride was described using zirconium sulfate tetrahydrate–silica gel as catalyst in excellent yields under mild reaction conditions.

A wide variety of alcohols, phenols, amines and thiols may easily be converted into the corresponding acetate derivatives by treatment with acetic anhydride (1.5–2.0 equivalents) in the presence of acetonyltriphenylphosphonium bromide (ATPB; 5 mol %) in good yields at room temperature. Aldehydes are smoothly converted into the corresponding 1,1-diacetates (acylals) in high yields in the presence of a catalytic amount (0.1 mol-%) of iron(III) fluoride at room temperature. The noteworthy features of the present system are shorter reaction times, chemoselective protection of aldehydes, and solvent-free conditions.
