  The invention relates to polypeptides, in particular to penta- and hexapeptides, characterized by the general formula I: ##STR1## or a functional derivative thereof, wherein Z represents hydrogen or NH.sub.2, ALK.sub.1 represents an alkylene or alkylidene group having 1-6 carbon atoms, ALK.sub.2 represents an alkylidene group having 1-6 carbon atoms, Met.sub.x represents the aminoacid radical Met, Met(O) or Met(O.sub.2) and Q represents the aminoacid radical Lys or Arg, with the proviso that one of the aminoacid radicals Q and the C-terminal Phe is in the D-configuration and the other has the L-configuration.

  A dipeptide named kyotorphin, H-Tyr-Arg-OH, and its retro isomer were synthesized using NG-mesitylene-2-sulfonylarginine. Two corresponding stereoisomers containing D-Arg were also synthesized. Among these, H-Tyr-D-Arg-OH was found to possess an analgesic effect 6 times higher than that of the corresponding L-isomer.
