The peraza analogue of polyether cryptand [2.2.2], 1,4,7,10,13,16,21,24-octaazabicyclo[8.8.8]hexacosane, has been synthesized in 70% yield via a two-step one-pot procedure by the condensation of tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) with glyoxal in isopropanol at -78 °C followed by reduction of the intermediate with Na/liquid NH3. This preparation is significantly faster, simpler, and higher yielding than the previously reported two-step procedure, with its lengthy isolation process and 45% overall yield.

The mixed-valence complex [Cu2L]3+1[L =N[CH2CH2N(H)CH2CH2N(H)CH2CH2]3N]} has been shown from EPR, visible Spectroscopic, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements to possess an unpaired electron delocalized over a short Cu(1.5)âCu(1.5) bond in both the hydrated nitrate [2.364(2)Ã ] and acetate [2.415(2)Ã ] salts: FenskeâHall MO analysis reveals direct Ï-bonding interactions between the copper centers.

Electrochemistry of a labile average-valence dicopper system

Electrochemical studies on an average-valent dicopper cryptate demonstrate the existence of a solvent-assisted disproportionation in acetonitrile, which is absent in water. The existence of this process was confirmed via absorption spectroscopy, which allowed the evaluation of thermodynamic parameters. The disproportionation equilibrium is enthalpically controlled, and the results suggest an upper limit for the bond energy of the one-electron Cu–Cu bond of 200 kJ mol−1.
