The condensation of glycerol, a platform chemical from renewable materials, with benzaldehyde to generate cyclicacetals was investigated using acidic ionic liquid as catalyst. Evidence was presented that the product mixture of 4-hydroxymethyl-2-phenyl-1,3-dioxolane and 5-hydroxyl-2-phenyl-1,3-dioxane, with cis and trans two stereo-isomers for each one identified by 1H NMR were obtained. A method comprising reacting glycerol with acetaldehyde or 1,1-diethoxyethane to produce 1,3-dihydroxyacetone (DHA), without using fermentation or direct oxidation of the glycerol is provided. DHA is useful in various products, including as a sunless tanning agent.

cis-5-hydroxy-2-methyl-1,3-dioxane (1) as the most volatile. When the distillation is carried out in the presence of an acid catalyst to promote interconversion, 1 is obtained as a nearly pure distillate stream. This is further adapted to a continuous reactive distillation which produced 90–96% 1. Thus a novel process is presented to convert glycerol to the desired acetal (1), which can be further converted to
