    The interaction between vanilmandelic and L-ascorbic acids led to a cyclopent-2-en-one derivative, whereas the reaction of methyl vanilmandelate with L-ascorbic acid yielded 2-furancarboxylic acid as the major product. The model 3-substituted 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohols and L-ascorbic acid produced ascorbigen-type structures, which easily decarboxylated to give mixtures of the corresponding l-aryl-l-deoxyketoses

  • Discovery of rapid spectral variability in the Ap star χ Psc

    Analysis of spectrograms with high spectral and temporal resolution taken during four nights in 1998 has revealed spectral-line variability of the peculiar star HD 220825 with a quasi-period of $$0\mathop d\limits_. 0.12 \pm 0\mathop d\limits_. 0005$$ . The observed variations have the form of wavelike oscillations whose amplitude decreases or increases during the observations. The CrII, SiII, and TiII lines exhibit the strongest variability. The scale lengths of peculiar regions are estimated to be from 5000 to 15000 km based on data for different lines. The results provide evidence for the presence of real wavelike dynamical processes at the stellar surface that change the physical conditions in the stellar atmosphere.

  • Anti-inflammatory properties of quebecol and its derivatives

    Herein we report our results on the anti-inflammatory activity of quebecol, a polyphenolic compound discovered in maple syrup. Bioassays demonstrated that quebecol has an anti-inflammatory effect on LPS-induced NF-kappa B activation and inhibits the secretion of two pro-inflammatory cytokines, IL-6 and TNF-alpha. We also prepared and tested precursors of quebecol and its derivatives corresponding to its substructures of interest, with the aim to study the structure-activity relationships. Comparing the results obtained for all tested compounds allowed the identification of the main moiety responsible for the anti-inflammatory activity of quebecol. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd.     We report here the total synthesis of quebecol, a new polyphenolic compound with potential applications recently isolated from maple syrup and produced during the condensation of the tree acer saccharum's sap. The synthetic approach we developed involves, as key steps, the formation of a dibromoalkene from an alpha-ketoester precursor followed by a double Suzuki-Miyaura reaction to unite the three aromatic rings of the target compound on a tetrasubstituted olefin precursor. Our methodology is an efficient pathway to the target compound and leads the way for future analogs. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
