A direct synthesis of salicylic acid chlorides is achieved via "metal-driven" intracomplex acylation of bromomagnesium and aluminum phenoxides with phosgene. 1-Methyl-3,6,8-trinitro-2-quinolone was found to be a suitable substrate for electrophilic arylation on benzene rings leading to (1,2-dihydro-4-quinolyl)phenols.
