The Political Role of the Internet in Societies in Transition: Russia and Ukraine Compared

Our research investigates the opportunities provided by the Internet for political parties to communicate to the electorate, and the extent to which party websites are used versus other information sources on the Web. We find that parties in Parliament, major parties and newly created parties are more prominent online than others, and, based on standard quality indicators, that parliamentary parties and new parties have better quality websites. This confirms some of the findings concerning parties online in established democracies. On comparing party with news websites, however, we find that sites of online-only newspapers are the most popular; that online versions of offline news outlets are of secondary importance, in contrast to what has been found in established democracies; and that party and politician websites are of least importance to users, based on the number of hits to these websites. The political role of the Internet in Russia and Ukraine is discussed in conclusion.

Novelrearrangement was found by reacting anilines with HCHO/H2O2 resulting in the synthesis of various benzaldoximes. The mechanism of the rearrangement is proposed and suggested that the rearrangement might proceed via unstable N-phenyloxazirane intermediate followed by the transfer of aryl moiety from nitrogen to carbon atom leading to the formation of benzaldoxime.

A site selective C–H aminomethylation at indole’s C3 position has been achieved by merging rhodium(III)-catalyzed C–H activation and photoredox catalysis in a one-pot manner. An investigation of the mechanistic insights rationalized the essence of the activation relay and the combination mode.
A tetrahydro-1,3,5-thiadiazin-4-one represented by the general formula, ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3, which may be the same or different, represent each an alkyl group, allyl group, cycloalkyl group, alkoxyalkyl group, benzyl group, phenyl group or substituted phenyl group having as substituents alkyl groups, nitro group, halogen atoms, alkoxy groups, or trifluoromethyl group and R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 may also represent hydrogen atoms, is a new compound and useful for controlling insects and mites.

A general method of preparation of derivatives of bis(o-azaheteroaryl)methanes from aromatic N-oxides is reported, the key step of which is a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between N-oxides of azines or azoles and in situ generated terminal difluoroalkenes containing an o-azaheteroaryl substituent at the double bond.
