An efficient practical homocoupling reaction of sodium arylsulfinate promoted by Cu(II) is reported whereby symmetricaldiaryl sulfone derivatives are obtained with high selectivity and reactivity by intermolecular cross-coupling. This homocoupling reaction is tolerant to many functional groups and proceeds under mild conditions.

The invented process is particularly suited for the manufacture of 4,4'-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone.
