A methodology for the efficient conversion of aromatic sulfonamides into their mono-nitro derivatives using tert-butyl nitrite is reported. The reaction exhibits a high degree of chemoselectivity for sulfonamide functionalized aryl systems, even in the presence of other sensitive or potentially reactive functionalities.

A practical copper‐catalyzed direct nitration of protected anilines, by using one equivalent of nitric acid as the nitrating agent, has been developed. This procedure features mild reaction conditions, wide structural scope (with regard to both N‐protecting group and arene substitution), and high functional‐group tolerance. Dinitration with two equivalents of nitric acid is also feasible.

A novel route for a SnCl2-promoted tandem reduction, ammonolysis, condensation, and deamination reaction which uses nitrile and 2-nitro-N-phenylbenzenesulfonamide/N-(2-nitrophenyl)benzenesulfonamide to synthesize derivatives of benzothiadiazine/1-(phenylsulfonyl)-1H-benzimidazole has been developed.
