Rate constants have been measured for reactions of the small oxyphosphorus anions PO−, PO2−, and PO3− with a selection of reactant neutrals at 300 K using a selected ion flow tube instrument. The PO− anion was the most reactive, abstracting an oxygen atom from O2, NO, CO2, and NO2 with rates below collisional. Of the neutrals studied, only NO2 transferred an O atom to PO2−, demonstrating that NO2 can provide a route from PO− to PO3− through PO2−. PO2− was found to react with WF6 through fast charge transfer, and with H2O by slow clustering. The only observed reaction found for the highly stable PO3− anion was slow clustering with H2O.
Gas-phase acidities of metaphosphoric acid and metaphosphorus acid: enthalpies of deprotonation

We have measured the rate constants for the endothermic proton-transfer reactions of PO3- with HI, PO2- with HCl, and NO3- with HCl as a function of average center-of-mass kinetic energy in a drift tube. Activation energies were derived from the data. Using the known endothermicity of the last reaction as a calibration, the endothermicities of the first two reactions were derived. This allowed the determination of DELTA-H-degrees acid values for HPO3 and HPO2 of 1300(-9)+15 and 1376 +/- 17 kJ mol-1, respectively. This value of DELTA-H-degrees acid for HPO3 establishes an acidity for the first time for a compound more acidic than HI (1315 kJ mol-1) (ref 1).
Matrixreactions of P2 and isotopic ozone molecules have been studied using both heated GaP and discharge of P4 as sources of P2. Isotopic shifts and multiplets support identification of PO, PO2, P2O, P2O2, P2O3, P2O4, P2O5 and PO2− in these experiments.

The products of the reaction of laser-ablated red phosphorus and dioxygen have been studied using experiment and theory. The bands at 480.3 and 1273.3 cm-l, previously attributed to PO3 in the matrix isolation IR experiments, are reassigned to PO3-. Also observed in experiment are PO2, PO2-, P2O, OPOPO, P4, and higher oxides.

The infrared laser absorption spectrum of the PO2 free radical has been detected in the reaction of oxygen atoms with white phosphorus. Over 300 lines of the ν3 fundamental band of the 2A1 ground state have been measured and assigned between 1300 and 1345 cm−1.
