An organic electroluminescent device comprises an organic layer 5, 5a or 5b, which has a luminescent region and contains at least one distyryl compound represented by the following general formula (1)
wherein at least one of R1 to R4 represents a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl group and another at least one thereof represents a substituted or unsubstituted naphthyl group, and X represents a cyano, nitro or halogen-introduced anthracene group.

Reactions of N-fluorobis(phenylsulfonyl)amine with naphthalene, 1-methylnaphthalene, phenanthrene, anthracene, and pyrene without solvent were investigated. Sometimes the fluorination of aromatic compounds with N-fluorobis(phenylsulfonyl)amine without solvent proceeded more selectively than at the use of fluorinating reagents in solution.
