  4-Sulfo-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl (STP) esters of biopolymer-labeling molecules are shown to be dramatically more water-soluble than the corresponding N-hydroxysuccinimidyl (NHS) esters. These STP esters are easily synthesized, and react readily with primary amines to give the same acylation products as NHS and pentafluorophenyl (PFP) esters. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd.
