A method of preparing a cyclic monomer, comprising: forming a first mixture comprising a precursor compound, bis(pentafluorophenyl) carbonate, and a catalyst; wherein the precursor compound has a structure comprising a) two or more carbons, and b) two functional groups selected from the group consisting of primary amine, secondary amine, thiol group, hydroxyl group, and combinations thereof; and agitating the first mixture at a temperature effective to form a second mixture comprising the cyclic monomer, the cyclic monomer selected from the group consisting of a cyclic carbonate, a cyclic carbamate, a cyclic urea, a cyclic thiocarbonate, a cyclic thiocarbamate, and a cyclic dithiocarbonate.

The disclosed methods enable zirconium sulfophenyl phosphonate, zirconium sulfate, or zirconia sulfate, which has high performance as a proton conducting material and high catalytic activity, to be produced at low temperature by reaction by adding sulfophenyl phosphonic acid or sulfuric acid to zirconium nanoparticles, the zirconium nanoparticles being a precursor of strongly acidic zirconium particles obtained by reacting zirconium alkoxide with zirconium butoxide as a chelating agent and nitric acid as a catalyst in isopropyl alcohol as a solvent.

An electrolyte membrane having a porous base material having pores filled with a first polymer capable of conducting a proton, wherein the porous base material comprises at least one second polymer selected from the group consisting of polyimides and polyamides; and a fuel cell, particularly a solid polymer fuel cell, more specifically a direct methanol polymer fuel cell, using the electrolyte membrane. The electrolyte membrane is excellent in the inhibition of permeation of methanol, exhibits no or reduced change in its area, and is excellent in proton conductivity.
