Crystal clear: The title macrocycle was constructed by a nickel‐mediated shotgun macrocyclization. The X‐ray crystallographic structure of [12]CPP revealed a circular structure incorporating two cyclohexane molecules within the ring. The [12]CPP molecules were also found to crystallize into tubular and herringbone structures.

The first synthesis and characterization of [9]-, [12]-, and [18]cycloparaphenylene was demonstrated utilizing a novel aromatization reaction. We refer to these fascinating structures as “carbon nanohoops” due to their structural similarity to carbon nanotubes. Additionally, we have utilized computational methods to understand the unique properties of these fully conjugated macrocycles.

If a method for directly functionalizing cycloparaphenylene compounds is developed, such a method is expected to be applied to any cycloparaphenylene compound, thus theoretically enabling introduction of a functional group into all cycloparaphenylene compounds. Therefore, a primary object of the present invention is to provide a method for easily functionalizing cycloparaphenylene compounds directly. A cyclopolyarylene metal complex in which a metal tricarbonyl is coordinated to one benzene ring of a cyclopolyarylene compound is provided. The cyclopolyarylene metal complex is obtained by using a production method comprising the step of reacting a cyclopolyarylene compound with a metal compound represented by the following formula:
M(CO)
3
Y
m
,
wherein M is a metal atom; Y is the same or different, and each represents a ligand; and m is an integer of 1 to 3.

The series of doubly-reduced cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) with increasing dimensions and flexibility shows the size-dependent structural changes and enhanced host abilities.
Tighten your belt: [12]Cycloparaphenylene, the sidewall segment of a carbon nanotube (see picture), has been synthesized in a selective manner through stepwise palladium‐catalyzed coupling reactions. The synthesis capitalizes on the ability of the cis‐1,4‐dihydroxycyclohexane‐1,4‐diyl unit to attenuate the build‐up of strain energy during macrocyclization.
