    Predicting Monomers for Use in Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly
    摘要:
    AbstractWe report an in silico method to predict monomers suitable for use in polymerization‐induced self‐assembly (PISA). By calculating the dependence of LogPoct /surface area (SA) on the length of the growing polymer chain, the change in hydrophobicity during polymerization was determined. This allowed for evaluation of the capability of a monomer to polymerize to form self‐assembled structures during chain extension. Using this method, we identified five new monomers for use in aqueous PISA via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, and confirmed that these all successfully underwent PISA to produce nanostructures of various morphologies. The results obtained using this method correlated well with and predicted the differences in morphology obtained from the PISA of block copolymers of similar molecular weight but different chemical structures. Thus, we propose this method can be utilized for the discovery of new monomers for PISA and also the prediction of their self‐assembly behavior.

The lubricating oil compositions can be those which are based on apolar base oils, especially hydraulic fluid compositions. The polymers can be comprised in certain lubricating oil compositions.

    Described are polymeric matrix compatibilized naphthopyran compounds, examples of which are certain 2H-naphtho[1,2-b]pyrans, 3H-naphtho[2,1-b]pyrans and indeno[2,1-f]naphtho[1,2-b]pyrans each having at least one substituent containing terminal and/or pendant groups selected from hydroxyl, carboxyl, sulfo, sulfono, (meth)acryloxy, 2-(methacryloxy)ethylcarbamyl, epoxy or a mixture thereof. Specific substituents are also present on the naphtho, indeno and/or pyrano portions of the compounds. These compounds may be represented by the following graphic formulae: 1 Also described are various substrates that contain or that are coated with such compounds. Optically clear articles such as contact lenses or other plastic transparencies that incorporate the novel naphthopyran compounds or combinations thereof with complementary photochromic compounds, are also described.

    Described are photochromic polyurethane coatings having improved durability as demonstrated by reduced swelling upon exposure to alcoholic solvents in the Percent Swelling Test. The coatings are prepared using polycarbonate polyols alone or in combination with different polyols as the source of hydroxyl groups. Also described are articles having such coatings. The coatings exhibit a Fischer microhardness of from 50 to 150 Newtons per mm 2 and good photochromic properties.

    Described is a photochromic polymer composition including the reaction product of at least one polymerizable photochromic material and at least one other copolymerizable material having a glass transition temperature of less than 23° C. upon polymerization. The photochromic polymer composition is adapted to provide an increased Fade Half Life in the Photochromic Polymer Performance Test as compared to the same photochromic compound used in the reaction product, but free of polymerizable groups. Also described are photochromic articles including the photochromic polymer composition.
