  The invention provides imidazole derivatives represented by the formula: (or the corresponding keto form) wherein Y is a hydroxy group, a lower alkoxy group or an amino group, and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts. These compounds have a potent immunostimulating activity and are useful for the prevention and immunostimulatory therapy of various diseases. The compounds where Y is alkoxy of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or amino may be prepared by reacting aminomalonamide with an imide ester or a salt thereof or with an orthoester where R2 is an imido ester moiety and R3 is alkyl, and the product compounds where Y is lower alkoxy can be hydrolysed to give the corresponding compound where Y is hydroxy.
