We developed new methods for the synthesis of functionalized 10- and 11-membered azalactams by reductive cleavage of bicyclic dihydropyrimidones as well as their quaternary salts. The azalactams were used as starting materials for further synthesis of annulated imidazole and tetrazole derivatives.
