Original and readily available 3,3′-diiodo-BINOL-fusedmaleimides were designed as hypervalentiodine(III) organocatalysts. They were used in intermolecular oxidation reactions at the α-position of ketones. The expected products were obtained with yields and enantiomeric excesses that were comparable to the best reported values achieved using structurally different organocatalysts.

The reactivity of enol esters toward [hydroxy(tosyloxy)iodo]benzene (HTIB) was assessed. These substrates were found to be rapidly converted in high yields to their corresponding α-tosyloxy ketones. This transformation demonstrates that these substrates can act as ketone surrogates. The scope of the method was investigated and aromatic, aliphatic, and cyclic enol esters were found to be suitable substrates

An efficient and metal-free method has been developed for the sequential oxidation of α-alkylbenzylamines followed by acetoxylation or tosylation for the synthesis of α-acyloxy/tosyloxy ketones using hypervalent iodine(III). The employment of a simple starting material, broad substrate scope and operational simplicity are the key features of this protocol.

An improved light activatable anaerobic curable composition of the type comprising:
a) an acrylate or methacrylate monomer or prepolymer;
b) a peroxide compound;
