Indium-Catalyzed N-Formylation of Amines under Solvent-Free Conditions

We have developed a simple, mild method for N-formylation of a wide variety of amines in the presence of indium metal as a catalyst under solvent-free conditions. This reaction is applicable to the chemoselective N-formylation of amino groups and α-amino acid esters without epimerization.

[reaction: see text] Treatment of a variety of alcohols, amines, and N-hydroxylamines with 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl formate gave the corresponding formylated adducts in high yields.
A fast, efficient and simple route for the N-formylation of amines has been developed by treating amines with 85% formic acid at 70 °C in the presence of 5 mol % of protic ionicliquid as catalyst under solvent-free condition. This method provides a green and much improved protocol over the existing methods.
