The oxidation of a range of β-cyanoethyl tertiary amines with mCPBA gives the corresponding N-oxides, which can be isolated or undergo Cope-elimination to give secondary hydroxylamines in excellent yield.

Chiral enamineN-oxides have been synthesised by a diastereoselective intermolecular reverse-Cope cycloaddition reaction between chiral hydroxylamines and activated acetylenes. Their structures have been investigated by NMR, X-ray crystallography and computational methods.
