  A compound of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is chlorine, bromine, or methoxy; and R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 are individually hydrogen or methyl, at least one of R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 being hydrogen; or R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 together are an ethylene group and R.sup.4 is hydrogen, or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.   New 6-[(2,6-dihalophenyl)(methoxy)methyl]-5-methyl-2-(nitroamino)pyrimidin-4(3H)-ones were synthesized by an original and efficient method involving regioselective O,O′-dimethylation of substituted mandelic acids in superbasic medium. The compounds obtained can serve as precursors to a novel series of non-nucleoside HIV-1 replication inhibitors.
