    A polycarbonate polymer containing repeating units represented by the following general formula ##STR1## wherein: X is selected from single bond, ##STR2## wherein: R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each independently selected from hydrogen atom; alkyl radical of 1 to 6 carbon atoms; cycloalkyl radical of 5 to 6 carbon atoms; ##STR3## wherein p is an integer having a value of from 0 to 3; phenyl radicals substituted at para position by a substituent selected from alkoxy radicals of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, phenoxy radicals, or halogen radicals; or p-biphenylyl radical, --CH.sub.2).sub.q wherein q is an integer having a value of from 2 to 10; or ##STR4## wherein r is an integer having a value of from 4 to 8, and having a reduced viscosity [.eta.sp/c] of at least 0.2 dl/g as measured in methylene chloride at a concentration of 0.5 g/dl at 20.degree. C. Such polycarbonates exhibit excellent optical properties such as high birefringence, and are useful as materials for optical devices. Also, a process for preparing the polycarbonates and novel dihydric phenols which can be used as materials for the polycarbonates are disclosed.

    A polycarbonate polymer includes: a monomer unit represented by a formula (1A) below; and a monomer unit represented by a formula (2). A haze of a solution that is obtained by dissolving the polycarbonate polymer in THF (tetrahydrofuran) at a concentration of 10 mass % is 5% or less (according to JIS K7105, optical path length of 10 mm). In the formula (1A), R and R′ each independently represent a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having 6 to 12 carbon atoms; n1 is an integer in a range of 2 to 4; and n2 is an integer in a range of 25 to 220; and in the formula (2), Ar represents a divalent aromatic group.

    A polycarbonate copolymer includes a repeating unit represented by a formula (1) below and a molar copolymer composition represented by Ar 2 /(Ar 1 +Ar 2 ) in a range of 25 mol % to 50 mol %. In the formula (1): Ar 1 and Ar 2 represent a divalent aromatic group; a chain end is terminated by a monovalent aromatic group or a monovalent fluorine-containing aliphatic group; and n represents an average repeating number of an Ar 1 block and is a numeral of 1.0 to 3.0, provided that Ar 1 and Ar 2 are not the same.

    Herein disclosed are a method for preparing an aromatic sulfone comprising the step of condensing, by heating, an aromatic compound with sulfuric acid or an aromatic sulfonic acid in the presence of a heteropoly-acid and orthophosphoric acid; and a method for preparing an aromatic sulfone comprising the steps of: condensing, by heating, an aromatic compound with sulfuric acid or an aromatic sulfonic acid in the presence of a heteropoly-acid and orthophosphoric acid; adding water and optionally an aromatic compound to the resulting reaction mixture to separate it into (i) a mixture of the aromatic sulfone and unreacted aromatic compound and (ii) an aqueous solution containing the heteropoly-acid, orthophosphoric acid and aromatic sulfonic acid, to thus recover the same. The aqueous solution containing the heteropoly-acid, orthophosphoric acid and aromatic sulfonic acid can be recyled or reused in the subsequent condensation reaction.
