The alkaline treatment of 17(R)-hydroxyeicosatetraenoylphloroglucinol and eicosapentaenoylphloroglucinol, which are the major components of the methanol extract of the brown alga, Zonaria diesingiana (Dictyota) afforded 17(R)-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic and eicosapentaenoic acids, respectively, in good yields.
