    Provided is a polyether-ester-amide consisting essentially of about 5 to 50 weight percent of polyamide segment (A) and about 95 to 50 weight percent of polyether ester segment (B), and having a melting point not lower than 160° C, a Shore hardness in the range of 80A to 45 D, a tensile modulus in the range of 100 to 1,000 kg/cm2 and an elastic recovery at 50 % elongation of not less than 70%, said polyamide segment (A) having been obtained from: a C6-C20 aliphatic diamine (A-1 and at least one dicarboxylic acid (A-2) selected from the group consisting of C6-C15 aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, terephthalic acid and hexahydroterephthalic acid, provided the total number of carbon atoms of said diamine and said dicarboxylic acid is not less than 16, said polyether ester segment (B) having been obtained from: a poly(alkylene oxide) glycol (B-1) having a ratio of carbon atoms number to oxygen atom number of not smaller than 2.3 and having a number average molecular weight in the range of 300 to 5.000; and a C4-C20 dicarboxylic acid (B-2).

    A polyether-polyamide block copolymer having an ethylenically unsaturated group is represented by formula (I): and a polyether prepolymer thereof is represented by formula (II):     R¹ is H or an aliphatic hydrocarbon group, R² and R³ are each C2-6 aliphatic hydrocarbon, A is -OOC- or -OOC-NH-; B is C1-18 aliphatic hydrocarbon which may contain -NH-CO-NH, -NH-COO- or -NH-CO-; M is a hydrocarbon amide chain; Q is an ether or amino group, E is an aliphatic hydrocarbon ether or ester C1-12 group; V is an ethylenic hydrocarbon group; k=1-6, m=0-140, n=1-140, m+n=7-140; j, p, q=0 or 1, i=1-1000, r=5-500; and     Y is an isocyanate carbamoyl lactam, acid chloride or (oxy)carbonyl lactam group. The prepolymer can be made by polymerizing an alcohol as R¹ component and an unsaturated 1,2- epoxy compound and/or a cyclic ether in the presence of an ionic catalyst to form a block or random copolymer; a component reactant then replaces the hydroxyl groups. The prepolymer is linked to a polyamide moiety by anionic polymerisation of a lactam; the block copolymer can be of A-B, A-B-A or multi-block type. The drawings show NMR spectra of a prepolymer and copolymer. The copolymer is moldable at high temperature and has good heat stability.

    The present invention provides a themo­plastic resin composition which is superior in mechani­cal properties, especially less in reduction of flexural modulus when absorbing water and superior in process­ability. This composition comprises: (A) 10 - 70 parts by weight of a poly­phenylene ether, a mixture of a polyphenylene ether and a polystyrene or a polyphenylene ether-styrene graft copolymer, (B) 90 - 30 parts by weight of a mixture of (i) a thermoplastic aromatic copolyamide and/or an aromatic nuclear-hydrogenated copolyamide in an amount of 0.1 - 70 % by weight of existing total poly­amide and (ii) a thermoplastic aliphatic polyamide in a complementary amount of 99.9 - 30 % by weight of existing total polyamide, and (c) 0.01 - 30 parts by weight, based on 100 parts by weight of the above components (A) and (B) of, at least one compound selected from the group consisting of oxazoline and a compound having, in its molecule, (a) carbon-carbon double bond or a carbon-­carbon triple bond and (b) at least one functional group selected from carboxyl group, acid anhydride group, amino group, acid amide group, imido group, epoxy group, carboxylate ester group, isocyanate group, methylol group, oxazolidine group and hydroxyl group. This composition may further contain an impact strength modifier, namely, rubber-like material and/or modified rubber-like material.

    A composition is prepared of, by wt, (I) 100 parts of a mixture of 5 to 100% of a polyphenylene ether or a mixture thereof with a styrene polyester, or a graft copolymer thereof and styrene and (b) 95 to 0% of a thermoplastic polyamide and/or saturated polyester resin; and optionally (II) 0 to 50 parts of a rubbery substance; (III) 0 to 50 parts of inorganic filler and/or glass fibers; and (IV) 0 to 10 parts of at least one of seven types of compatibilizer which improves compatibility of the polymers (I) (a) and (b). The production of these components is described. The components are mixed in any order and molded. The surface of the molded article, e.g. a film, plate or fibers, may be degreased and is irradiated with ultraviolet light of wavelength less than 300 nm, preferably 185 and 254 nm as main wavelengths, for 20 seconds to 10 minutes: The irradiation improves the coatability of the surface, which may then be coated with a coating of an alkyd-melamine or an acrylic urethane.
